James sat on the edge of the fire pit wishing, for once, to have someone who could create fire here. He had managed to start up something, even with the stiff breeze coming from the water, and it was burning now, but the amount of effort to be able to heat up cans of beans seemed to be a little much.

Mostly though, he had needed something to do that wasn't pacing around and answering Dani's questions. He didn't know how this was going to go, and while James didn't mind a little uncertainty, he wasn't a fan of waiting for things to happen. He should have said they'd go to them.

"What do you think, sleeping on sand good for your back or not?" he asked his sister. His back was still bothering him, and he was contemplating pulling out a blanket and sleeping on the sand. It would be cold, but at least he'd get to stretch out. Right now that idea held far more importance than not freezing to death.

Though, he supposed, he'd end up regretting this line of thought in the middle of the night tonight if he went through with it.

(ooc: totally made up that big lagoon can have fire pits, BUT OH WELL)

Beans were not what Dani wanted, sitting at the edge of the fire pit. For one, the whole thing made her crave hot dogs no matter what mystery meat the health network claimed they were jammed full of. Secondly, the whole thing made her want a beer in her hand.

She wanted it to be a Godawful road trip from when they were kids and she and Jordan swam out into the ocean right up until Jordan thought something touched her foot.

She wanted it to be a day when she dragged all the kids out of the house to the beach where they could all pretend things weren't nearly as bad as they where. The kind of trip where Dani nearly regretted the whole thing, listening to the kids fight in the back seat, until they got there and for the first time after a long time, she could breathe again.

And the only thing that was right was that they sat on the beach pretending that things were going to be alright when they weren't. Nothing would fall into place so easy. Maybe there was a rosy sunset on their horizon, but not until after a bit of hellfire first.

Dani shrugged, dragging her toe through the sand. "Bet there are suckers somewhere who pay to sleep on it." Maybe good for sore backs, but it wasn't her back that kept her tossing and turning most of the night. Her mind wouldn't stop going, even when the sun sunk down and the air turned cold.

"How 'bout you try it out, and if it does you any good, after all's said and done, you can open up an overpriced sand-sleep-spa," Dani offered. James deserved at least a little effort from her on the conversation front.

Nerves crackled along Lucy's skin as they walked down the path to the beach. It was already dark, casting strange shadows across their path, and setting her teeth on edge. She was a city girl through and through. All this nature crap was making her skin itch. She wondered if it was too late in the season for bugs, because she certainly felt like mosquitos were about to jump out at her and bite her all over. Even if it was December.

Luckily, or unluckily, she was carrying the bottles of beer, and a bag with other food items, so she was weighed down enough that jumping at every little thing wasn't really an option. Still, she was beginning to regret suggesting they walked to the beach instead of just shadowing there. At the time, it had seemed like a good idea, give her a chance to burn off some energy.

Stepping into her mother's camp, Lucy heard her mother's suggestion and made a face. "God, rich people really will pay for anything, won't they?" she asked. Maybe she should have dropped everything and run for her mother, but she didn't want to break the bottles. But her heart did leap at the sight of her mother, her own mother in the flesh. And James, standing by the fire and looking just the way she remembered him. Even though everything had changed.

"Hey Ma, Jimmy, we come baring gifts."

Mia had long ago decided she deserved better than this, but the universe didn't seem to agree with her quite yet. Not that it ever had, or ever really would, because, even much more so than her, the universe was and would always remain indifferent. It didn't care what Mia wanted or didn't want for that matter, which was as good a reason as any not to wait and make her own luck instead. She'd learned that at sixteen, when everything had seemingly gone to hell, and she wasn't going to unlearn it now.

It was with this in mind that Mia relaxed her shoulders, put her best gameface on and left the house. She didn't bother to start up a conversation, knowing she was most likely going to have to do plenty of talking soon enough, and besides, Lucy was on edge, buzzing with energy, and Mia wanted to feed off it for as long as possible. The sharpness of it was something she liked, drawing her focus first towards Lucy, then away and towards the future entirely.

When they arrived down at the beach, Mia managed to make out James and whom she presumed was Danielle only a few moments after Lucy did. The woman looked exactly and yet nothing like her wanted picture, and while there was no real physical resemblance between mother and daughter as far as Mia could tell, at least not from this kind of distance, Danielle's posture and gestures were so familiar it nearly made Mia roll her eyes. Once they were close enough, Mia realized that even the cadence of Danielle's voice matched Lucy's in some places.

"Come on," she said in a tone that implied she was definitely rolling her eyes at Lucy. "Give me that." And hug your mother. But Mia didn't bother saying it. Instead she just reached for the sixpack in Lucy's hand and for the bag filled with food items, and tugged them out of her grip with the kind of gentle insistence that allowed no argument.

(OOC: Short because I figured there would be some kind of reunion moment, but if not, let me know and I can edit.)

Dani turned at the sound of a familiar voice, immediately spotting two women walking toward them. Indeed they did come baring gifts.

She stood up, unsure of what to do with her hands, feeling unprepared. It had been so long since she'd seen the face of one of her children. What she wanted was to shed her guarded shell, but it felt weak, like she'd never recover if it all came down at once.

Lucygot closer and the facade dissolved anyway. Dani threw her arms around her daughter.

"Your mugshot looks godawful," Dani said, for lack of anything better to say. Dani doubted she personally looked any better in flesh than she did in pictures floating around. The truck life certainly wasn't doing her any favors.

She stepped back, holding Lucy at a distance for a second before dropping her hands. There was something monumental in the moment, moving forward. The progress felt real now that Lucy and Mia were standing in front of her. It wasn't jut wondering round the state of California looking for answers.

It was still strange to James, seeing his niece with a different face. He knew that it was Lucy, but the Agency had changed it enough that she looked strange to him, like a picture from photo album of his great aunt. Actually, she probably did look like that. Lucy had always looked more Morrill than Elliot to him anyways.

His gaze drifted from Dani and Lucy who were hugging to Mia. He didn't change his position, but there was a fire between them, keeping him momentarily safe. He met her gaze for drawn out moment, trying to gauge what she was going to do.

Not that he'd ever been that good at telling what she was about to do.

"Yeah, and they've got so many nicer ones of me," Lucy said to her mother. She rolled her eyes. "It's like they don't care about our beautiful hair." She grinned and then hopped around the fire to hug him. "Hi Jimmy!"

He hugged her back, but his eyes stayed on Mia. "Hey Lulu," he said, smirking down at her.

"Right, and this is Mia," Lucy said, coming full circle to stand beside Mia again. "'Nother ex-agent at this party." She took back the beer from Mia and offered one to her mother. "Can we eat? I'm starving."

Mia soon let her gaze flick away from Danielle and Lucy, dark eyes instead settling on James over the glow of the fire. Holding on to the beer, she waited in silence, waited for Danielle and Lucy to hug it out or whatever it was that they would do, and looked right back at James when he looked her way. Finally, she gave a small nod towards him, but the gesture held little to no acknowledgement of their earlier interaction.

"James," she greeted amicably enough. When Lucy began to reach for him, however, Mia studied them only briefly and after handing the beer back to Lucy moved to find herself a place beside the fire -- and beside James. Without looking at him, she smiled at Danielle in greeting, then couldn't help but roll her eyes at Lucy's behavior.

"Am I glad we found you," she murmured, looking at Danielle and lips twitching up in a joking manner, her eyes alight over the fire. "This one has been trying my patience for months." Leaning forward, Mia first reached out to ruffle Lucy's hair with a smirk, then took one of the bags filled with food. "You may have her back now."

Pulling out the sandwiches and salad they'd brought along, she handed Lucy's usual choice of sandwich to her before offering the rest for James to pass along.

When Mia had told Lucy that she needed to talk to James alone, Lucy hadn't been sure what the hell all of it was about, but she could easily guess that it was not about being best buddies while at the Agency. Now she wasn't so sure that it was a good idea for them to be forced to sit next to each other, though she had no idea how to stop that from happening without abandoning her mother to Mia--

Ducking out from under Mia's hand, she wrinkled her nose at her. "I was a delight," she said, sticking her nose up in the air and mostly joking. She almost added something about who was protecting who, but it seemed untrue now, and while she could joke about it with Mia (well, sorta), she didn't want her mother or uncle to decide it was the way their dynamic worked.

Lucy suddenly very much wished that she wasn't here. Was she gonna have to do complicated relationship calculus all the time she was with her family? It was so much easier when it was just her and Mia.

Taking her sandwich, Lucy put on a big smile and looked at her mother. "So, what've you two been doing? Did Liv have the baby?"

Dani let Lucy go, watching in with James and Mia. Something tingled up her spine, like she already gave herself away as the person with her mind worn most obviously on her sleeve. It wasn't a comfortable feeling, being the most vulnerable. She felt like she had to make up for it.

By watching, mostly. Lucy and Jamie, Jamie and Mia, Mia and Lucy. The way they regarded each other. Was the playfulness for Dani's benefit or genuine? She couldn't tell. Knowing Mia to be an ex-Agent didn't exactly settle Dani's stomach, either.

Dani forced a smirk. "Ya know it's Brooke that'll have the reward up for her, right? I got nothing to repay you with."

It was impossible to judge her just on that. Jamie was one, too, after all. But still... When Dani couldn't sleep, she thought about how if it wasn't for Liv, if it wasn't for his daughter interfering, there would be no ex in that title. What made Mia ex. Choice or not?

Dani was out of the loop, the only one who hadn't seen the Agency from the inside. Suddenly, she felt like a tag-a-long.

"Baby's born. Baby's healthy. Safe. We were up in Canada working for room and board at this camp. A little too quaint. Kinda too quiet," Dani shrugged, helping herself to a sandwich from the bag passed around. The pace was too easy, too comfortable. It left thoughts to buzz too loud in the back of her head. "You?"

James watched Lucy. Mia would be hard to read, but Lucy wasn't as good at hiding her emotions. She would be the best view into Mia that he could get. Though it did depend on how much Lucy cared. Still, James couldn't imagine that Lucy would have stuck with Mia if she hadn't managed to find a way to like her. Even if it was all a lie.

He chewed, carefully looking towards the fire as Dani revealed the information about Ned. There was no way they could get around that one. Instead he smiled, and shrugged, like he was fine with Mia knowing about his grandson.

Then Lucy looked towards Mia, a question in her eyes before she shrugged. "We've been hoppin' around," she said casually. "Doing a little of this, a little of that." She grinned. "Now we can finally start heading back."

James wondered what actually had been going on in those vague words, but Lucy seem uninterested in giving details, and James realized that Lucy was waiting for permission from Mia.

Well, that was an interesting development.

"She's being modest," Mia said, but she was smiling just slightly, eyeing Lucy with a fond sort of amusement. It was gratitude of sorts, though Mia would not have admitted it aloud, and a certain degree of pleasure at not being wrong about Lucy (yet). Hopefully the girl would stick with her, or else the upcoming weeks -- months? -- were going to be difficult, perhaps even nearly impossible to manage.

Turning her attention back to James and Danielle, Mia's smile lessened before disappearing altogether. "We were able to meet up with Naomi and Ernesto," she started to elaborate, then paused, eyes flicking to Danielle. "I'm not sure how much James has told you, but James and I both used to work with them way back when." She looked at both of them again. "Either way, the four of us managed to get our hands on quite a bit of info when we visited the Las Vegas BCA branch at the end of October. Some of it might be a bit outdated by now, but it's still useful and there's also heaps of it."

Reaching for the tupperware containing her salad, Mia took a moment or two to locate dressing and fork, then turned her gaze back to the group. "And yes, we're finally starting to head back. We just need a way inside, which we're currently working on, and well..." She looked from Danielle to James, then back again, and lifted both eyebrows. "A team. And a good team at that. That is what we really need."

The news about the baby wasn't nearly enough for Lucy. She wanted pictures and names! But that would probably bore Mia to death and Lucy could ask later. Right now there were other things to discuss.

"I assume you will be including the other Reapers in our group, is there anyone else? We've been looking, but not as long as you two have."

The remembrance of Naomi made Lucy make a face. It wasn't that the other woman was that bad, it was just what she could do that made her shoulders want to inch up around her ears. Lucy sighed and took a swig of her beer.

"There's a hacker," she said. That much seemed alright to say. More than that, Lucy would leave up to Mia.

A team. They were building a team. Dani scanned over their group, looking over top of her sandwich at what sure as hell felt like a motley crew. But they were good at things, if not at perfect cohesion. Her and James' and Lucy's police backgrounds, history with the Reapers and with the Agency, piles and piles of training between them.

"I'm familiar with the Reapers," Dani said, giving James a quick, hard look. No thanks to him. It didn't at all surprise her to know Mia was a part of it. She had a handful of characteristics in common with others Dani knew. She could see shades of Pandora in Mia. It made her skin crawl a little. But the enemies or her enemies were still her friends, weren't they? Ex-agents and radicals were the kinds of people she needed to see New Haven freed.

Dani kept forgetting she was sort of a radical at this stage. A fugitive, the matriarch of a whole fugitive clan.

At least a mission, a goal, was something Dani could get behind. Wandering and hiding and inching closer made Dani restless. Here they were on the brink of developing a strategy, something Dani was actually good at.

"More than just a hacker," Dani assumed. No one short of mutant would stand a chance. So what did their hacker know?

"More than just a hacker," Mia confirmed.

It was true. But the problem with M wasn't her ability -- though it was certainly a powerful one -- it was her personality. The reason Mia hadn't mentioned their hacker so far was simple and had little to do with wanting to keep secrets. Indeed, choosing her secrets carefully was going to benefit her much more during this endeavor than any other course of action would, of that at least she was convinced.

Giving a small sigh, Mia shrugged and rolled her neck, aware of the slight tension in her muscles, aware of the distrust in the air that could so easily derail this. The only person here who had any reason to trust her at all was Lucy, but in the end Mia needed more than that. They all needed more than that.

Her gaze flicked to James, then back to Danielle.

"I'm uncertain how much we can count on her, if we can even count on her at all." The admission was ironic in its own way, coming from her lips, but this time Mia did not find it particularly amusing. "She's the one who found us, the one who pointed us to you. She's an ex-Agent, but she's also volatile and not necessarily a team player."
